Imperial city of Huê

As a sanctuary of Vietnamese civilization, the Imperial City of Huê was the crowning achievement of an architectural complex created by the Nguyen dynasty in 1805. For years, the city was abandoned, destroyed by wars, eaten away by termites and left to crumble in a devastating climate. UNESCO is today aiding a renovation program to save these pagodas, tombs and temples and a major effort from Vietnamese authorities is being made to return Huê to its former glory.
